We know that it can definitely be pretty hard to plan and keep track of a budget as a university student. So here are some of our best tips to help save and manage your money! We also have an upcoming event that will delve much more into these topics in collaboration with 2 speakers from McMaster’s Money Centre virtually on March 6th from 4:30-5:30pm (https://mcmaster.zoom.us/j/92822984992) so please feel free to come out and learn some great tips for budgeting as a university student!!
Our first tip is to take advantage of the fact that you are a university student! Many stores recognize this and will offer discounts solely to students. Main examples include Fortinos & Food Basics which offer 10% off groceries every Tuesday, as well as Shoppers which offers 20% off for students every Thursday. Here is a link as well for other stores/restaurants/shops that also give discounts just for students! https://msumcmaster.ca/info/savings/ Another tip is to try buying used textbooks, or even try renting textbooks. You can often find the books you are looking for on Facebook Marketplace, or Amazon. You can even try to find alternative online resources as well! Another great way to plan out your money at the beginning of the month is by making a simple budgeting chart or planner! You can make note of where you’ll be spending money for things such as rent, groceries, gas, other necessities, and leisure. Planning out your money ahead of time will make you feel organized and less overwhelmed about your spending. This is a great way to be financially responsible as a student! Lastly, another way to save money as a student is by cooking your own food at home as well as bringing your own snacks to campus. Buying campus/outside food everyday can be expensive as well as unhealthy. A more cost-effective way to eat is to limit how many times you eat out and instead buy your own groceries and cook healthy meals for yourself at home. Also, if you plan on studying on campus all day, it's a good idea to pack a lunch or snacks for you to munch on! We hope these tips can help you manage your money and budget more effectively as a student!
